The Larder Wall

A Beautiful Balance of Traditional Craftsmanship and Contemporary Design

The Larder Wall

This bespoke Larder Wall was designed and handcrafted to create a striking feature within the room, combining practical everyday storage with the warmth and character of traditional cabinetmaking.

The concept was to create a beautifully proportioned wall of cabinetry that would offer generous storage while maintaining a clean, elegant appearance.

Each cabinet was individually handmade using birch-faced plywood for the interiors, carefully finished with Osmo satin hard wax oil to enhance the natural beauty of the timber grain. This gives the interiors a wonderfully warm, subtle sheen while providing a durable, protective finish. The natural birch plywood creates a beautiful contrast against the soft painted exterior.

For the doors, I chose a high-quality joinery-grade MDF, carefully machining a series of vertical grooves into each panel to recreate the appearance of traditional tongue-and-groove wall panelling. This subtle detail gives the cabinetry its distinctive character, bringing a timeless quality to an otherwise contemporary design.

More detail

One of my favourite features of this project is the bespoke larder cupboard itself. Behind the beautifully understated doors lies a carefully considered arrangement of shelving, complemented by slimline spice racks, individually handcrafted from birch plywood and fitted to the inside of each door. These provide practical, easily accessible storage while showcasing the craftsmanship that goes into every detail.

To introduce a little design flair, I also created a tall, slender display shelving unit, allowing the natural birch plywood to become a feature in its own right. Integrated LED lighting gently illuminates each shelf, highlighting the beautiful grain and bringing a wonderful warmth to the cabinetry.

A further recessed display area, complete with a handmade drawer, provides a charming contrast to the surrounding painted doors.

Finally, I incorporated concealed LED uplighting along the tops of the cabinetry, casting a soft, warm glow across the ceiling and giving the entire piece a welcoming atmosphere, particularly in the evening.

For me, this project is a lovely example of how traditional cabinetmaking techniques can be brought together with contemporary design to create something both beautiful and functional.

Every element has been thoughtfully designed and individually handmade, from the smallest spice rack to the full-height cabinetry, creating a truly bespoke piece of furniture that is as practical as it is elegant.
